The March meeting at Swindon started with Jack giving us some of the history of Wildgoose Nursery. He met his wife Laura when they were both students at Wisley. On finishing there they worked in several gardens and visited well known nurseries all around the country. One day they were looking for plants for the front of a border and saw some violas and fell in love with them. Soon after at a plant fair they were talking with Mr, Roberts who owned Bout’s Violas (near to Droitwich). He was looking for a buyer to safeguard the collection. On asking if he could give them eighteen months to find a house and some land he only allowed them two months They found somewhere in the Corfe Valley but during a storm all their poly tunnels blew away followed by floods. This was the start of a fascinating talk about Violas by Jack Willgoss which ended our winter season of talks as next month we start our summer of garden visits.
